Rescue Me…..
At first glance, they are long legged, long nosed, prick eared, down eared, in-between eared, high tucked, small eyed and grinning! They are not at all what one typically thinks of when one thinks “dog.” But dogs they are—specifically Greyhounds—and the Virginia Greyhound Adoption (VAGA) has a slew of them looking for their forever home.
In motion, Greyhounds are pure elegance and scathing speed flawlessly combined. Maybe that is what draws crowds at the Greyhound racetracks? But what draws VAGA to the racetracks is the mission “to place as many retired racing greyhounds as they can in permanent, responsible homes where they will get the love and care they truly deserve.”
The racing world of Greyhounds is competitive and a Greyhound’s career is short lived. The dogs that are rescued by VAGA range in age from two to five years, with a life span averaging 12-15 years or more. These retired racers have plenty of healthy, active years ahead of them.
Greyhounds come in 18 official colors, but the variations from there are endless. Except for the grin… they all come with a toothy grin!
Please visit the Virginia Greyhound Adoption at www.virginiagreyhounds.org. Their kennels are filled to capacity, and overflowing with rescues. Please consider adopting or fostering to give these wonderful dogs a chance at life beyond their racing careers in a loving, forever home.
